IPS Empress is a leucite reinforced feldspathic porcelain, creating added strength to the general feldspathic veneer, and has sharper, easier to finish margins. Most often used in inlay/onlays of posterior teeth, Empress has proven to be a strong and esthetic veneering material. Easier (than feldspathic) to mask out and hide discoloration of prepped teeth, Empress also benefits from a stump shade.
A layered enamel can be applied, or a surface stain may be used prior to the glazing cycle. This can, in some cases, make it more difficult to match the shade of the existing teeth, especially those with incisal translucency, hence their popularity for larger, multiunit cases.
