Porcelain fused to metal crowns consist of a thin metal thimble or coping, which is layered with tooth colored porcelain. Porcelain fused to metal crowns are fairly strong, but require more tooth reduction than an all metal crown, or some of the other tooth colored crowns. One advantage that porcelain fused to metal crowns have, is that in the event of a chip, or porcelain fracture, the underlying metal coping is providing most of the strength, and will continue to protect the remaining tooth structure until a repair, or new crown can be made.
